May 14th, 2007 by Mike

Hello Hello, it’s good to be back!

Here it is, show 17 of Into the Gamescape.

In this show, we ramble at length about the games we have played recently, we go deep undercover in the Grogscape, you get to discover who won in the gamescape decathalon, and we have a chat about 18xx with Mike Garrett.

All good honest fun!

    Hi Guys,

    Good episode :)

Urland has become a bit of a favourite at Shire Gamers since we started stocking it, but I think you played it with its worst number.

If you ever get the chance to play it with five, do so …. It’s much more fun when three people get actions, and the fur (?) starts flying with some of the more nast genetic modifications.

I’ll be happy to host an 18xx one weekend in High Wycombe. I can get a few other people that have played before and you are more than welcome to join us. I’d suggest an 18xx like 1861 as a good one to try first.

Another top show guys. Hammer of the Scots, Powergrid, 18XX and subbuteo..heaven. Good in depth looks during the show yet you kept it moving really well. You had me breaking out my HotS to affix the stickers this evening. Now for the rules. The decathalon is great fun too. Well done all of you.

Mike congratulations on being GotW on BGG - very similar gaming background to mine, i too was a child canasta, solo and bridge player! Good look with your 1st little one, 20th May is a good birth date…! My only bit of parental advice is to relax, it helps relax the bairns too. Enjoy.

    Best wishes

    Thanks Guys!

It’s been a roller coaster of a week really, and I have really enjoyed being GOTW (it’s a lot of work though!!).

Thanks for the kind words and best wishes for the nipper!

Richard, Look forward to hooking up in the summer!

    Mike

Hey Mike! I finally stopped by to check your show out! Sounds weird listening to an English podcast where the discussion isn’t about Arsenal. Congrats on your GotW and your new Meeple!

    Kanpai!

    Well well well.

Another excellent show guys. Really enjoyed it.

Power Grid is my second favorite game I think, unless it is Wednesday, in whjich case it might be something else. I love playing PG, though frequently I only get to play it on BSW against gwen, Trav, and KSensei. Generally means I get to finish about third, maybe second if I am having a really good day.

Re: 18XX. We played one of them, but don’t ask me which. It seemed to me to be not as fun as the Crayon Rail games. I say that with the understanding though that we did not have the best rules explainer ever. Game play was a bit thick and, it seemed, fiddly for us. Could just be our thick and fiddly heads though. Still, Lunar Rails and Iron Dragon are favorites around here.

And you had to go and mention Subbuteo, didn’t you? I’ve been trying to find a decent set in the States for what seems like ages. I like the whole idea of the thing, with the flicking and the little men dressed in the proper uniforms and the soccer (sorry, football). Youtube has some really detailed, fascinating games on display that I have quite enjoyed watching.

So, to sum up: Good Episode. Congrats on what I can only assume is the imminent arrival of your expansion to Married Life: The Game with no Rules. Further congratulations on GotW. I can only hope the next fellow is as interesting as you proved to be.

    Cheers.
